Bangladesh; its current political regime....rubbish
i apologise to those who have a deeper understanding and love for bangladesh beforehand.
Over the last five years i have been lightly monitoring the current political climate in bangladesh and although i am from the uk, feel that the current regime is bloated, corrupt and will dance for the highest bidder. when i was last over there in 2000 for 4 months then again in 2001 for two weeks, i was constantly stuck in ('artal) strikes, these were organised by various organisation in the country. the most prominent one that always sprang to attention was the student body, whether they belonged to BNP or Awami. call me a cynic but i thought the students duty was to study and not to disrupt the political flow of the country. They are not elected representatives. i had this conversation with students at sylhets MC college, i got the feeling i was getting too personal, like i had cussed one of their mothers. everywhere i went i was a witness to corruption whether i was at court or just plain travelling. i remember the drive from dhaka to chittagong, then onto cox's bazaar then a straight drive back to sylhet, i was stopped by regional police on five occasions, each time my driver was asked to grease the wheel so we could pass, but when they saw a British bangali, they shit their pants. whilst i was there bangladesh sold their rights to the methane resource to the americans, even though the chinese were prepared to train, support and supply the machinery, at a lower take off the top end. now i know some of you may say that we were bullied into it by the US, but i do know we got some shitty F14 tomcats in return as well as (i forget the figure) a paltry sum for complete rights. i smelt something fishy (excuse the pun)... i bet someone got a nice villa in the states. F14 tomcats!!!! they were recalled due to design faults. who did they want the bangali pilots to be???? Tom Cruise!!!! the politicians/judges are treated like some latter day saints, whilst not performing their duties. they feed off the country like bloated flies and tread down on the masses. Bangladesh has been a republic for some 30 odd years now, what has the current political regime achieved? 30 years... the country is digging itself into a hole while hasina and khaleda are in power. never mix women and politics, especially two women against each other. i can only say that hopefully if these two witches were dead, no that would make them a matyr to the idiots running around with bandanas, alive then, but retired; the country would perhaps thrive and grow, and be a country that all bengali (ex-pats, foreign born and indigineous) people would be proud of. i have met hasina and ershad....how??? my father was into politics, when they came to the uk i met them. ershad at brick lane mosque, and hasina at the dorchester hotel in park lane. anyway, i hope some of you might educate me further... its interesting you mention sylhet, but i felt that sylheti people provide a lot of the income in the sylhet district and we as sylhetis in banglasdesh get a rough ride. i noticed the chittagong was more respected than sylhet, so far as to build a new international airport. "international"??????
there are more sylheti (district) around the world than any other district, and we have to wait for an international airport after everyone else! and even then all we got was a shed with a 40w lightbulb at either end of a paddy field to denote the start and finish of a runway. lol a lot of foreign monentary transfers end up in sylhet. a district which is self sustaining. i think we should revolt and become our own independent state. who's with me? |

If Bangladesh divides further, no one can survive. It is already a smaller than sustainable country. Realistically speaking, Sylhet is not a city of financial significance in Bangladesh. It does not produce food or other significant commodities. A handful of "cockroach immigrants" living abroad does not really affect our national economy. Other than few ppl building nice looking luxurious bangalos in sylhet, they have no other significant contribution. Beyond UK, and 1 or 2 states in the USA, number of sylhetti immigrants does not exceed mainstream bengali population. On the other hand, Cittagong is an international port. It is a significant financial zone. All the industries of our Country is dependent on them. There are massive investments (shipping & import/export) that practically drive the economy of the country. It is only fair that an international airport be built there. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if in the future, Cittagong is more advanced than Dhaka city. |

Lol there is no jealousy regarding sylhet. Sylhet is a very small part of bangladesh and for it to divide and become a seperate country is in itself hilariously ludicrous!! Like Russel bhaiya said it doesn't have the necessary commodities to support itself.
I'm not jealous of sylhet and I don't have anything against Sylheti people (my dulabhai and one of my bestfriends is from sylhet). But you know Dhaka isn't any less than Sylhet... if you want to see beautiful apartments go to Bashundhara, Baridhara, Dhanmondi, Uttora even Gulshan (when its not under water!)... we have nothing to be jealous of. Being born and brought up in London I love Bangladesh deeply; and i'm proud of how the country has developed. Yes the government is corrupt and infact alot of the population is too, but you know for many of the people they must resort to bribes and crime because they have no other viable options... doing things the right way isn't going to feed your family and kids... stealing from your neighbour is Khaleda's chief advisor Kamal Siddique is my Uncle. And being a politics student when he came to London I found it the perfect opportunity to criticise the Bangladesh government and the President and maybe even clarify a few things. He told me that he hates Khaleda just as much as every other person in Bangladesh and you know its so easy to say just shoot the two witches (Khaleda and Hasina) but that isn't going to change the corrupt government of BD... for that it will need a political revolution! N.B Bangladesh has the 2nd most corrupt government in the world after Nigeria.

no no I understand.. using cockroaches as an analagy is inappropriate but I don't think he intended to cause any offence. But its just the way you said "lot of jealousy here regarding sylhet" so I figured it meant anyone that posted here so far and that was not from sylhet!
As for me being from Dhaka. I speak shuddho bangla, but my dada bari is in Comilla though 95% of my family is either in Dhaka or scattered across the globe and usually when we visit home we tend to stay in Dhaka and visit the village for a day or two.

tamz, you sound familiar..... how many sisters do you have?
your uncle should do bd a favour, you know.......click, click, boom. lol. seriously he should advise her to step down. cockroach immigrants sounds funny, but with hindsight it is insulting. glass houses, russel, glass houses. i'm glad my parents decided to leave bd to have a better a life for themselves, i'm assuming everyone here living outside of bangaladesh is doing the same thing? so you see "cockroach immigrants" is highly inappropiate. i have an aunt (khala) who lives in Dhanmondi, been there, not bad. |

Hi Tamz, If you read the previous posts, the word jealousy werent even mentioned before cockroach immagrants was stated. However, if thats the case then we're all cockroaches as far as im concerned, as were all are investing in Bangladesh one way or the other. I come from Moulvibazar not far form both of the bazzars and my 20 bedroom apartment is rented out to professionals i.e teachers and nurses etc who do not pay the going rate for that town (believe it or not but living there is equivalent to living in Hamstead nowadays.......One family has an apartment of their own and pay half the rent as they maintain the place. To me this says i am providing decent accomodation to these teachers and nurses so they can do their job to the best of their ability and help kids and people in that area. I also have a place in Cirimongol which is rented out to similar professionals. I know this may be nothing compared to what other cockroach immagrants are doing and providing but i'd like to think im doing my bit............does this still make me a cockroach immagrant as i've invested in a bungalow? Oh yeh i forgot to mention, these places are also for me and my family to stay when we go over to AMAR SHONAR BANGLADESH!! |

'Cockroach immigrants' is offensive to all Sylhetis. The term should not be used to describe hardworking Bangladeshi's who have been able to provide for their families as best as they can. Cockroach implies an infestation of filth and disease- are we decendants of disease? If so, then some dhakayas are also from this pool of filfth as many migrated from Sylhet to Dhaka.

^ I've not read the whole thread...just the last thread reminds me of a very funny joke, once my uncle who is in London now, told me:
If anything wrong goes to any Sylhetis, and if you advise him to go to Dhaka for the treatment...he'd simply say: Why I'd go so far...Dhaka...oh my my...I better go to London! Haha...it wasn't serious...just for fun!

ahhh I don't know what to say... (Russel bhaiya ...ki shuru korla
I find it deeply saddening that people consider themselves as sylheti or moulibaazari or dhakaiya first rather than bangladeshi... If you guys are going to take offence on that remark.. we could have easily taken offence when in a previous post which implied that ONLY those from sylhet donate money to sylhet.. and that those from the other districts/cities such as dhaka don't! Russel bhaiya used cockroach as a 'figure of speech' though it has negative connotations... he himself being an immigrant in Canada aswell as his wife and the rest of his family being back in DHK, i'm quite certain he didn't mean to cause offence in that sense.

no i didnt mean any of you... if you look at it... most bengali in UK and other contries live as illegal immigrants.... a very sad life... And even people who are citizens, live by being cab drivers, or cooks, or waiters... And these people used to be in a respectable position in their country... they gave it all up to be a "cockroach immigrant" in a western country.

you have to ask "why"?
these people left to provide for a better life for their families. my father left bangladesh in the '60s, mainly because he had the foresight to see that he would not be able to make a living for his family as a teacher in bangladesh, which is what he did when he came to the uk. he became a teacher. he made sure that my sister and i had the best possible education according to his means. she is now a teacher in a high school and i of course am a software developer. at the time of my fathers "cockroach immigrancy", the british had lost a huge majority of their men during the second world war, and had put it to the rest of the commonwealth that if any men wanted to come to the uk then they could on a work visa. men from across the globe came to the UK, from india to the west indies. granted, its not the same anymore and a lot of "visitors" are either legal or illegal, and they work in crappy environments. but you have to ask why these people are leaving their own countries. don't forget AMAR SHONAR BANGLADESH has not made living in bd conducive, this way bd govt. has conveniently off loaded some of its economic problems acroos the globe. by the way, recently my uncle came over from sylhet to organise a fundraiser amongst us "cockroach immigrants" to help pay for a madrassa in my home town, Jagganathpur. i asked him if the govt. was chipping in, you can guess what the answer was.
